Digitizing Field Data Collection and Facilitating Inspections – Our Experience
December 14, 2020
The classic approach to field data collection involves pen and paper, which is still a trusted and the only way for most. However, with the advent of rugged handheld computers and reliable cloud storage options, it should not come as a surprise that the process is rapidly shifting towards going entirely digital. KCB, realising its potential, has adopted an entirely digital way of collecting field data. Our experience shows that it reduces post processing time, diminishes random errors, maintains consistency, and automates the creation of a single project specific database using multiple handheld devices. This paper gives an overview of the processes that were involved in developing the method, prototyping it in a drilling project, and successful application in four of our recent projects. Discussion on cost savings and our planned path forward in facilitating field inspections is also included.
