Mining
At KCB, we combine technical acumen, collaboration and innovation to deliver solutions for long lasting and sustainable development in the mining sector. Our multidisciplinary team comprising of engineers, scientists and closure practitioners bring experience across all phases of mining, from scoping and feasibility to operations, closure and post-closure. We design and deliver critical infrastructure such as dams, water management systems and tailings storage facilities with consideration for the long-term closure objectives. We focus on mine waste management including inspections, safety reviews, and risk management aligned with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM).
Collaboration is core to our approach. By working closely with clients, we develop practical sustainable solutions that prioritize safety, realistic, and feasible solutions that stakeholders can get behind. We assess design options from a risk-perspective, for the long-term management of physical and environmental risks to strive for a safer and more sustainable future for the mining industry.
Our Global Mining Presence
- North America keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_down
Our Canadian mining operations began in British Columbia seventy-five years ago, and for over three decades, we have been serving clients through offices in Vancouver, Edmonton, Saskatoon and Calgary, Ontario and New Brunswick. We have a long history in providing engineering, geoscience and environmental services to the region’s mining sector such as at the Highland Valley Copper Mine in Logan Lake, British Columbia, and the Jackpine Mine in Fort McMurray, Alberta. Through our Engineer-of-Record services, we play a key role in tailings and water dams stewardship throughout the mining life cycle.
Our operations in the U.S. range from large-scale proposed tailings facilities to helping our clients meet GISTM standards at their legacy tailings facilities.
- South America keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_down
KCB continues to expand into the South American mining sector. Our offices in Lima, Peru and Belo Horizonte, Brazil support a growing portfolio of projects across the region from Argentina to Ecuador. We have worked on some of the most challenging resource sector projects in the region, specializing in geoscience, environmental science and engineering, including soil and rock mechanics, water management and hydraulics. We are recognised for mine waste, mine water management, and environmental and socioeconomic services to mining and other clients in Peru, Brazil, Chile, Argentina, Ecuador and Bolivia.
- Europe keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_down
Our offices in the UK and Ireland support mining opportunities in Europe, Africa and Asia. The UK team is the engineer of record for a tailings storage facility in Sweden that is currently being upgraded to meet internationally accepted design standards.
- Australasia keyboard_arrow_down keyboard_arrow_down
Our Australasian operation services a wide variety of mining clients within Australia and across the Pacific Rim. We are based in two offices, Brisbane and Perth, as well as a regional presence in New South Wales (Newcastle), Victoria (Melbourne), South Australia (Adelaide) and Tasmania (Hobart). We have worked on some of the largest and most challenging resource sector projects in the region, while exporting professional consulting services to a variety of international mining and exploration projects. We are recogniszed for mine waste and mine water management services in remote and equatorial environments, including Indonesia, Papua New Guinea, Vietnam, Laos, Fiji and Mongolia.
A key operational project includes the Hidden Valley mine in PNG which is owned by Harmony Gold. KCB has been supporting Harmony with the design and construction supervision of the first large on-land tailings dam in PNG that has become the benchmark for responsible tailings management in PNG. We have also led sitewide integrated closure planning involving interdisciplinary teams to support risk-informed closure designs.
Leaders in Tailings Management and Dam Safety
Around the world, KCB lends our skill set to the practices of dam safety and tailings management. Our technical professionals are regularly called upon to review tailings practices for the industry and participate in investigations of dam failure incidents which have included in recent years Mount Polley dam in Canada and the Fundão Tailings dam in Brazil.
KCB contributed to the development and subsequent release of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) by the Global Tailings Review. As proponents of the GISTM, we work with clients to ensure projects meet the standards.
