Joe joined KCB’s Calgary office in 2009 from the UK, where he developed and led the advanced geotechnics and numerical modelling group. Joe became an Associate in 2013 and was promoted to Principal in 2020. He returned to the UK in 2018 and opened KCB’s office in York to pursue opportunities with international clients.
Joe’s experience in mining projects includes site characterization, tailings dam design and operations, seismic hazard analysis, advanced tailings dam stability, deformation and seismic response analysis and seepage modelling. He has worked on projects in Brazil, Kazakhstan, the USA, Canada, Papua New Guinea, Mexico, the UK, Finland, Australia and Peru.
Joe is a trusted advisor to many tailings review boards, and investigation panels related to recent tailings dam failures, such as the Fundão tailings dam in 2015, the Cadia North tailings dam in 2018, and the Feijão tailings dam in 2019.
Education
Joe has a B.Sc. in geology from the University of Hertfordshire, and an M.Sc. in engineering geology and Ph.D. in applied engineering geology/geomorphology from the University of Leeds.
He is a professional geoscientist in Alberta, and a professional engineer in Alberta and Saskatchewan. Joe is an elected fellow of the Geological Society of London.
