Andy Small is a Geotechnical Engineer with over 37 years of experience in embankment dam design, dam safety, water management, closure, construction and inspection, project management, environmental engineering, and mine waste management. He is the Engineer of Record for several mine sites in Canada. He is a skilled facilitator for risk assessment and decision analysis sessions for tailings and closure planning. Andy has been an active member of the Canadian Dam Association for over 25 years and the International Commission on Large Dams for 10 years. He has been involved in the development of several guidance documents related to dam safety.
Key Projects
Andy’s key projects include the Lakeshore Gold Mine, Ontario; East Kemptville Mine, Nova Scotia; Heath Steele Mine, New Brunswick; Long Harbour Mine, Newfoundland; and the Thompson Mine Tailings Basin in Manitoba.
Education
Andy has a B.Sc. in Civil Engineering from the University of New Brunswick and a M.Sc. in Geotechnical Engineering from the University of Alberta. He is a Registered Professional Engineer with the Engineers and Geoscientists of British Colombia, Professional Engineers and Geoscientists, Newfoundland & Labrador, Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of New Brunswick, Professional Engineers Ontario, Engineers Nova Scotia and Engineers and Geoscientists Manitoba.
Fun Fact
Andy is an avid curler in the winter and enjoys chasing little white balls around the grass in the summer (his wife can’t understand why).
