Design and Construction of the Hamata Tailings Dam, Hidden Valley Mine, Papua New Guinea

December 22, 2020

The Hidden Valley Mine Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) is the first large tailings dam to be successfully constructed in Papua New Guinea (PNG). Deeply weathered tropical soils, high annual rainfall with no apparent wet or dry season, and seismically active conditions add to the complexities of tailings management in PNG. This webinar describes the key challenges and mitigations during construction of the Hamata tailings dam at the Hidden Valley Mine.

Presenter:

Mark Rynhoud, RPGeo - Senior Engineering Geologist, Klohn Crippen Berger
Mark has over 20 years’ experience in earth science and environmental disciplines. His recent experience includes engineering design and support at major mine sites across the Asia-Pacific region, including field investigation, planning and construction monitoring for tailings dams. He is based out of KCB's Brisbane office.
