Each year, during the Calgary Geotechnical Society Annual General Meeting, the Executive presents an award to an outstanding individual who has provided exceptional efforts, energy, and/or contributions to the Art of Geotechnique in Calgary.
This year our very own Bill Chin was the well-deserved recipient. Bill is geotechnical engineer with over 35 years of experience in the investigation, design, construction and safety evaluations of major earthfill dams for water and tailings storage, as well as for foundations of large industrial buildings. His geotechnical practice extends over several industry sectors, including water resources, mining, oil sands, hydroelectric and pulp and paper mills. He has worked throughout Canada and worldwide, including the United States, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Peru, Chile, Philippines, New Caledonia, St. Lucia, South Africa and Indonesia. Bill was actively involved in preparing the geotechnical sections of the Canadian Dam Association's (CDA) Dam Safety Guidelines (1999).
Previous award winners include individuals who have dedicated significant amounts of time to local CGS events and/or are accomplished practitioners, academics or retired engineers.
The recipient is chosen by the Calgary Geotechnical Society Executive from nominations submitted by members for potential recipients whom they feel deserve such recognition. Current Calgary Geotechnical Society Executive Members are not eligible for the award.
