The many roles of water in tailings management alternatives analysis

Alternatives analysis is a critical component of tailings management, as emphasized in the Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management (GISTM). While water should be a fundamental consideration in tailings management alternatives analysis, discussions often remain superficial, focusing primarily on stability and water conservation aspects, such as the presence or absence of a tailings pond; however, water influences nearly every aspect of tailings management. This paper outlines key water-related considerations and presents a case study to illustrate some of their significance. Water-related factors in tailings management alternatives analysis include: Indigenous, traditional, and cultural values; dam safety risks; tailings geochemical properties, process water and seepage; downstream and upstream conditions; project lifecycle and end land use; overall project mine plan and water management; robustness, reliability, and redundancy; simplicity, constructability, and flexibility; and permitting and corporate social responsibility. This paper aims to provide insight into how practitioners should approach water considerations in detail when conducting a tailings management alternatives analysis.
