Mahmoud Elbanna, M.Sc., P.Eng.

Mahmoud has more than 20 years experience in leading geotechnical teams to deliver tailings dam design, construction, operation support, site characterization, risk assessment, ground improvement, dam safety review, and dam performance management. Mahmoud’s key project roles include Designer of Record (DOR), Engineer of Record (EOR), Senior Reviewer, Dam Safety Assessor, Technical Review Board Member and Project Manager for Tailings Storage Facilities globally.

Mahmoud’s key projects include: Boliden – DOR for tailings storage facility in Sweden; Anglo American – Independent Technical Review Board (ITRB), Operation Risk Assessment (ORA) and Dam Safety Reviews (DSR) in North America, South America, and Africa; Imperial Oil – Kearl Lake In-pit Tailings Storage Facilities DOR and Project Manager in Alberta Oil Sands, Canada; Suncor – South Tailings Pond (STP) DOR in Alberta Oil Sands, Canada; Canadian Natural Resources Limited – Albian Geotechnical Team Lead and the External Tailings Facilities EOR in Alberta Oil Sands, Canada.

Education

Mahmoud has M.Sc. in Geotechnical Engineering from Queen's University. He is professionally registered with the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA) and affiliated with the Canadian Geotechnical Society and Canadian Dam Association.

In a typical day, Mahmoud gets to work with clients and colleagues in two to three different continents, which makes his job enjoyable while gaining global experience in tailings management.
