Klohn Crippen Berger wins International Project of the Year at GE Awards

July 26, 2023

Klohn Crippen Berger and partners, GeoSonic Drilling and ConeTec, were awarded 'International Project of the Year' for the Aitik Tailings Dam Investigation at the Ground Engineering (GE) Awards held in London, UK on July 12, 2023.

About the Project

Klohn Crippen Berger (KCB), ConeTec and GeoSonic Drilling worked together to complete an extensive geotechnical scope on the Aitik Tailings Storage Facility (TSF) in northern Sweden. A geologically challenging site and scope with up to 20m of large surface rock fill overlying 60m of tailings in turn resting upon natural foundation soils and ultimately, foundation rock. The extensive drilling scope incorporated multiple geotechnical tests incorporating 4 different sets of subcontractors all working from the Sonic Rig.

Large parts of the work were carried out in the winter months and required unique and innovative solutions to drilling/testing both in severe winter conditions as well as drilling on a frozen pond. Collaborative approaches with all stakeholders were paramount to delivering this project safely and on-time with high quality data to inform engineering decisions.
