Ward is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer in KCB’s Calgary Resources group, and is a Team Lead, the Alberta Business Development Lead, and a Project Manager.
Since 2011, he has provided engineering services to clients that span the mining, oil sands, and hydroelectric industries, and has been involved in projects within Canada, the United States, and Mexico. He is well versed in the design, operations, and construction aspects of earth fill structures, and has knowledge related to external and in-pit tailings storage facilities, open pit mines, waste dumps, surface water management, and closure and reclamation. Ward has also fulfilled the role of Deputy Designer of Record (DoR), Owner’s Engineer, and has been involved as an Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB) member.
The projects he has worked on or managed consist of site investigations, foundation characterization, hard rock and soil core logging, developing geology models, dyke zonation design, stability, seepage and deformation analyses, design of internal drainage systems, processing and evaluating instrumentation data, conducting liquefaction susceptibility assessments, dam safety inspections, risk assessment workshops, slope remediation, preparing construction drawing packages, construction support, and closure landform assessments.

Ward’s recent key projects include CNRL Horizon In-pit and Perimeter Dyke Detailed Design, CNRL MRM and JPM ETF Design and Operations Support, CNRL MRM Closure Outlet Channel Feasibility Assessment, CNRL JPM Closure Landform Stability Assessment, TransAlta Brazeau Power Canal Remediation Project, TransAlta Rundle Canal Raw Water Intake Owner’s Engineer, and TransAlta Desktop Study and Site Investigations at Interlakes Dam, Rundle Canal, and Whiteman’s Dam.
Education
Ward has a B.A.Sc. with First Class Honours in Geological Engineering (Geotechnical Option) from Queen’s University. He is a Registered Professional Engineer with the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists & Geophysicists of Alberta. He is also an active committee member with the Calgary Geotechnical Society (CyGS).
Fun Fact
Outside of work Ward likes to stay active while playing golf, tennis, pickleball, and hiking. In his downtime he also enjoys cooking, playing the guitar, singing karaoke, and growing his record collection.
